       Kung Fu simply means hard work, or a skill attained through hard work.  A chef, a painter, or an architect is said to have good Kung Fu if the quality of their work is outstanding. Pertaining to athletics, Kung Fu can be exercises that increase stamina, strength, stability, coordination, and flexibility. Running, lifting weights, or doing calisthenics can be seen as Kung Fu.  Today people practice Kung Fu in order to stay healthy. Kung Fu is important to prevent certain ailments. For example, stretching can prevent back problems, or cardiovascular workouts can help regulate blood sugar, and lower cholesterol levels.

       The term has also become popular in categorizing many forms of Chinese martial arts. Kung Fu over the years has developed into the definition of fighting or self defense, by a way of disabling or gaining control over your opponent through physical force. Joint locking, kicking and punching, or wrestling to the ground are all forms of Kung Fu. Today, many of us have heard of Tai Chi, Wing Chun, Praying Mantis, Drunken Fist, Shaolin, or Tiger Claw Kung Fu. These are some of the more recognized schools, however there are many more types of arts that are being practiced today. Think of Kung Fu as a broad term that includes various Chinese Martial Arts.

       What Kung Fu means ultimately boils down to one thing. That is, what you want it to be. Not every person will practice Kung Fu for the same reason. One may practice solely for health reasons, while another will practice to learn the martial science for self defense. Whatever the reason it may be, the key to success is hard work!
