Lion Dance

The Chinese Lion Dance is best known for the celebration of the Lunar New Year. According to one legend, on the eve of each New Year, a sinister creature called Nien would wreak havoc upon villages by destroying all the crops leaving the villagers little to eat. Soon thereafter, the villagers were instructed by their elders to emulate the beast by constructing what resembled the mystical creature. They used paper-mâché and bamboo to construct the head, and a long cloth for the tail. Two people would occupy and maneuver it to make it look like a lively animal. The next time the monster would approach, the "Lion" would scare it away with the playing of the drum, cymbals, and gongs. The popularity of this event is what inspired lion dancing. People believe the Lion brings luck and prosperity by warding off evil spirits.
